Gum disease starts as a less threatening, but still dangerous, stage called gingivitis. Periodontitis is a severe, more advanced stage of gum infection that damages the soft tissue in the mouth. If it is left untreated, it can cause bone and tooth loss. It is common and preventable.
The best ways to prevent periodontitis are to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and go to the dentist for regular check ups. Doing all these things helps us catch early signs and start treatment quickly. Call our office now to set your appointment today!
What is Periodontitis Diagnosis and Treatment Like?
To diagnose periodontitis our team will review your medical history to check for symptoms and then examine your mouth. We’ll look for plaque and tartar buildup and check for easy bleeding. We’ll then measure the pocket depth between your teeth and gum line, and take dental x-rays. With this information we’ll be able to determine how severe a case you have and create a treatment plan to meet your needs.
Common types of treatment include scaling to remove tartar and bacteria from tooth surfaces and beneath gums, root planing which will smooth the root surfaces to help prevent plaque buildup, and antibiotics to help control bacterial infection. Our dental team is committed to helping your gums return to health. We encourage questions and are always willing to listen to your concerns.
